Katinka Hosszu of Hungary won her third gold medal of the Rio Games in the 200m individual medley on Tuesday. In her three previous Olympic appearances, she earned zero medals, though in 2012 was a threat in the medleys.
She lowered the Olympic record racing for gold, stopping the clock at two minutes, 6.58 seconds. Great Britain’s Siobhan-Marie O’Connor earned the silver three tenths of a second behind.
Team USA’s Maya DiRado finished with the bronze medal with a time of 2:08.79. DiRado, who is making her Olympic debut in Rio, previously announced she would retire at the conclusion of the Games to kick start her career as a business analyst in Atlanta. DiRado’s teammate Melanie Margalis finished fourth with 2:09.21.
During Tuesday’s preliminary heat, Hosszu strangely did not appear behind the blocks of her scheduled 200m butterfly race, leaving the U.S.’ Cammile Adams to win the heat going away. Hosszu was fined 100 Swiss francs for not racing, approximately $102.
China’s Ye Shiwen finished last in the final with a time of 2:13.56. She won gold in the event in 2012 with a time of 2:07.57, but since has suffered with poor performances.
