Share Share: June 7, 2016 August 5, 2016 Model Olympian: MyKayla Skinner She says her greatest obstacle in her gymnastics career was, "I was so little I couldn't get over the vault! Now I am one of the top vaulters in the world! Go figure!!!" MyKayla Skinner is an artistic gymnast from Gilbert, Arizona. Skinner was a member of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team at the 2014 World Championships. At the 2014 Worlds, Skinner won team gold with the U.S. women and an individual bronze on vault. She was then an alternate on the 2015 Worlds team. 18-year-old Skinner with her mother, Kym. Skinner has a big family, with three older siblings and 10 nieces and nephews. She began gymnastics at age 4 because her older sisters, Chelsea and Katie, were taking classes. Skinner was the all-around champion at the Glasgow World Cup in March 2016. Skinner’s strongest event is vault, where she’s won medals at the last four national championships. She plans to attend the University of Utah in the fall of 2016. A fan of country and cowboys, Skinner says her favorite movie is The Longest Ride and favorite musicians are Sam Hunt and Taylor Swift. Skinner goes by the nickname “Myk” in the gym. Skinner says she always has to have a lucky bow in her hair when she competes. Skinner says gymnast Shawn Johnson is her biggest inspiration. She says her greatest obstacle in her gymnastics career was, “I was so little I couldn’t get over the vault! Now I am one of the top vaulters in the world! Go figure!!!” Skinner’s Olympic crush is male gymnast Jake Dalton. Skinner has been a member of the senior national team since 2012. She was age-eligible for the 2012 London Olympics but did not qualify for the Olympic Trials. At the 2014 Pan American Championships, Skinner won four gold medals: all-around, team, vault and floor. Skinner’s motto: “Set the goal, understand the obstacles, create a positive mental picture, clear my mind of self doubt, embrace the challenge, stay on track, and then show the world I can do it!!!” Whether on the balance beam or beach, gymnast MyKayla Skinner looks ready for Rio.
