The sixth day of shooting in Rio has only one gold medal event, women’s 50m rifle 3 positions. Qualification begins at 8:00 a.m., and the final starts at 11:00 a.m.

The one name that will jump off the screen at you is Virginia Thrasher, or Ginny. You may remember on the first day of the Olympics when she earned the first medal of Rio for the U.S.

The reigning champion is U.S. shooter Jamie Lynn Gray, but she will not be taking part in the Olympics. Back injuries forced her into early retirement.

China’s Du Li, who won the event in the Beijing 2008 games, is in fine form and looks to contend. She finished behind Thrasher in the 10m air rifle for the silver medal.

Two other potential contenders are Croatia’s Snjezana Pejcic and Germany’s Barbara Engleder.

Snjezana Pejcic finished seventh in the 10m air rifle finals on day one of Rio, and she also has a silver medal in the discipline at a World Championship and a European Championship to her credit.

Engleder placed sixth in the 50m 3 positions final in the London 2012 Games, but recently took home silver at the ISSF World Cup, also in Rio.
