Arctic air rolling over New England left personnel at the Mount Washington Observatory bracing for record breaking cold this weekend.
Temperatures at the mountain’s summit hit -46 degrees at 8 p.m., just one degree away from the lowest temperature ever recorded at -47 degrees, nearly 100 years ago.
Officials at the observatory recorded wind gusts of 127 miles-per-hour as of Friday night. The wind plunged wind chills to -108 degrees.
One weather observer at the observatory spoke to CNN, describing how a powerful gust of wind snapped a steel pin holding an exterior door shut on Friday. The observer said the door flew open, requiring three people to close it again. Footage shared with CNN showed a wooden brace placed against the door and bungee cords tying the handle to a nearby handrail.
