PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WHDH) - A new movie about a Providence boxer who lost it all only to climb back to the top had its red carpet premiere Thursday evening in Rhode Island.

“Bleed for This” is the true story of Vinny Pazienza, a Rhode Island boxer who made it big before he was seriously injured in a near-fatal car crash. Pazienza was told he would never walk again but against all odds he recovered and returned to the ring a year later to become a champion.

“Vinny meant so much to the state of Rhode Island,” said Miles Teller, who plays Pazienza in the movie. “For him to have this moment while he still sort of has it together, very few people get a movie made about their life.”

Pazienza, who is now 53, struggled with drinking and gambling addictions in the past. He told 7News “Bleed Like This” tells it like it is.

“The greatest thing about it is the movie is really good,” said Pazienza. “That’s the greatest thing about it.”
