NEW YORK (WHDH) - A surprise Kanye West concert caused chaos in New York over the weekend.

Thousands of fans descended on Manhattan’s East Village after West announced a surprise performance at a small venue.

At least 4,000 people swarmed around Webster Hall, which only holds about 1,500, after West tweeted about the pop-up concert.

Minutes before the performance was to begin, the venue announced the show was canceled and urged would-be concert goers to leave.

Eventually, West, along with wife Kim Kardashian and their entourage, departed and police began clearing the streets.

It was not clear whether tickets for the show were ever put up on sale or whether Webster Hall knew West planned to do the show before he announced it on Twitter.
