BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — Police say a former driver for a bus service used by the Connecticut Department of Children and Families has been charged with sexually assaulting a 12-year-old intellectually disabled passenger.

Police say Luis Cruz, who drove for Connecticut Transportation Services LLC, turned himself in Wednesday. Cruz has been charged with fourth-degree sexual assault, risk of injury to a minor and illegal sexual contact of a victim under 16. He was held on $10,000 bond after pleading not guilty Thursday.

The girl was being taken to her foster parent’s home in Bridgeport in January. Police say the driver made an unscheduled stop in Newtown where the girl said Cruz touched her inappropriately over her clothes.

Cruz’s public defender could not be reached for comment.

The bus service says Cruz has been fired.
