DUXBURY, MASS. (WHDH) - An unusually large number of dolphins have become stranded along the Massachusetts shoreline over the last two days. Rescuers were able to save some of them.
A single common dolphin was found Monday in shallow waters at Duxbury Bay, stuck on sand. The dolphin was taken out of the water, treated with an IV and released into deeper water by the New England Aquarium.
Ten dolphins were found in the area on Sunday, but two of them died. Experts say the dolphins may be chasing fish, but an illness could also be to blame.
A flu-like virus could be affecting the dolphins, according to the New England Aquarium.
The New England Aquarium says this year has been an above average year for dolphins found stranded.
Experts say standings on the South Shore are rare and that they are more likely on Cape Cod.
