CHELMSFORD, MASS. (WHDH) - One person was killed and four were injured in a multi-car crash in Chelmsford Sunday.

State police said the crash occurred on Route 3 northbound around 1:30 a.m.

According to police, a car was traveling northbound in the right lane when it was struck from behind by another car. The force from the impact caused the first car to roll over, ejecting the driver and two of the passengers.

The driver, a 34-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at Lahey Hospital in Burlington.

One of the passengers, a woman from Westmoreland, N.H., was also taken to Lahey Hospital in critical condition.

A second passenger, a 27-year-old woman, was taken to Tufts Medical Center in Boston with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The third passenger, a 31-year-old man from Keene, N.H., was taken to Lowell General Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the second car, a 45-year-old man from Nashua, N.H., was taken to Tufts Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Route 3 northbound was closed for approximately 4 ½ hours.

The crash remains under investigation.
