WESTBORO, MASS. (WHDH) - Police are investigation a deadly wrong-way crash on the Mass Pike in Westborough overnight Monday into Tuesday.

The crash happened in near the intersection of 495 around 11:55 p.m.

According to police, a 28-year-old Rutland male was driving on Route 90 westbound in a 2007 Ford Focus when he pulled into the breakdown lane before making a U-turn and then began traveling eastbound in the wrong lanes.

The Focus side-swiped a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox before striking a 2007 Dodge Charger and then a 2010 GMC Terrain head-on.

The driver of the Focus was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Equinox, a 37-year-old man from Bridgeport, Conn., and one of his passengers, a juvenile male, were uninjured, while another passenger in the car, an adult female, sustained minor injuries and was transported to UMass Medical Center for treatment.

The driver of the Charger, a 31-year-old Auburn man, was transported to UMass Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

The driver of the Terrain, a Bridgeport, Conn., man, and his three passengers were all transported to UMass Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

The identity of the wrong-way driver is being withheld pending family notification.

An investigation is ongoing.
