STONEHAM, Mass. — A 16-year-old high school student was killed early Sunday morning in a tragic crash in Stoneham.

State police responded to Pond Street around 12:45 a.m. on a report that a sport-utility vehicle had rolled over in a single-vehicle crash.

The driver, later identified as Sydney Coiro, was found dead at the scene. She was a junior at the high school, described by those who knew her as kind, outgoing, sweet and generous.

“During the short time that she was with us at Stoneham High School, she had touched many of us with her genuine smile and warmth,” Principal Donna Cargill said Monday. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

Friends and classmates could be seen bringing flowers to the crash site Monday morning.

School officials said there will be grief counselors on hand to help the students deal with the tragic loss.

State police are investigating the cause of the crash. No other details were immediately released.
