SALEM, N.H. (WHDH) - Nearly two dozen people, including 17 young children who were on a field trip, were taken to the hospital after a chain-reaction crash involving a school bus and a dump truck in Salem, New Hampshire, on Thursday morning.
Officers responding to a report of a crash in the area of 360 North Broadway near Lake Street around 10:15 a.m. found a dump truck that had slammed into a mangled pickup truck and a school bus stopped a short distance from the wreck, according to the Salem Police Department.
Police say the dump truck rear-ended the pickup truck, pushing it into the school bus.
Three adults and 17 children were transported to Lawrence General Hospital with minor injuries, a fire official said. Most of them have since been treated and released.
“The impact was significant enough that they got bounced around on the bus a little bit,” Salem Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Emanuelson said. “But again, all minor injuries.”
The remaining children were picked up by their parents.
The bus was carrying 43 people from the Little Sprouts summer camp program. It was headed to a bowling alley.
In a statement, Little Sprouts CEO Sarah Schroeder said, “The safety and wellness of every child in our care is always our greatest priority.”
A local pizza shop delivered food and water to children who were waiting to be picked up by their parents.
Police urged motorists to avoid as crews worked to clear the wreckage.
The crash is under investigation.
