A speeding bus crashed into two cars on a highway in western India Sunday.

The accident killed at least 17 people, including the bus driver, police said.

The bus struck the cars while they were parked on the side of the highway to fix a flat tire.

All three vehicles fell into a ditch from the impact of the crash, according to local police.

Villagers and police climbed into the ditch and helped rescue the injured and ferry them to nearby hospitals.

Police stated that the death toll is expected to rise as many of the injured were in critical condition.

The crash occurred about 20 miles east of Mumbai, India’s financial hub.
