Two drivers accused of driving while drunk were arrested just hours apart early Saturday morning.
Police said 26-year-old Christian Cugini, of Hopedale, was drunk behind the wheel as he swerved down the wrong side of Route 140 just before 2 a.m. Police received several 911 calls from people concerned there would be a head-on crash on the two-lane road.
The dangerous drive was caught on a police officer’s dashcam video. At one point, Cugini allegedly tried changing into the right line and even used his signals. He was stopped by police shortly afterward. Cugini was charged with OUI, marked lane violation and speeding.
As police were processing Cugini’s arrest a few hours later, officers said they got another call about a vehicle that had gone off the road. Police said this driver went off the road, across a resident’s front lawn on Hartford Avenue, up a hill and then into another resident’s backyard. The car then landed in a ditch, where it got stuck in the mud. That driver was also arrested and charged with OUI.
Police said they hope these stories serve as a reminder to the community to never drink and drive.
