PLYMOUTH, MASS. (WHDH) -
Two men detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Plymouth County were released due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19 on Friday.
The men were in civil detention at the Plymouth County Correctional Facility and were voluntarily released by ICE, the ACLU of Massachusetts said.
A third detainee was ordered released after a judge determined that they were at high risk for serious illness from coronavirus, the ACLU said.
One of the detainees released suffers from underlying medical conditions and is more prone to dying if they contract the virus.
A petition for their release was filed by lawyers on Wednesday, the ACLU said.
One of the men released will no longer have to appear for a bond hearing in immigration court and has been reunited with his family.
Both men will now self-isolate during the coronavirus outbreak, according to the ACLU.
The ACLU has filed similar lawsuits in other states, including Maryland, Pennsylvania and California.
