MEDFORD, MASS. (WHDH) - A Medford man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting an MBTA Transit Police officer.
On Tuesday around 2:20 p.m., Xavier Galatis, 23, allegedly evaded MBTA fare at Harvard Square Station and was confronted by an MBTA employee.
He then allegedly became violent and threatened the employee with death, transit police said.
Officers approached Galatis and received similar threats.
Officers asked Galatis to stop and leave the station.
He refused, police said, and continued to shout threats at officer and racial epithets at MBTA employees.
After a struggle, police said, they were able to place Galatis into custody.
Transit officers say they’ve caught 2,000 fare evaders so far this year, but no one else has reacted as violently as Galatis did during the confrontation.
He was arraigned in Cambridge District Court on Wednesday for assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
He was released on personal recognizance.
