DORCHESTER, MASS. (WHDH) - A fire in a residential building in Dorchester displaced 21 people and sent a firefighter to an area hospital Tuesday, according to fire officials.
The fire broke out in the three story building on Cushing Avenue, eventually growing to four-alarm status, according to a tweet just after 2 p.m. from the Boston Fire Department.
Images shared by officials showed crews battling the fire, pouring water into the building’s basement and using ladders to get water into upper floors.
The Boston Fire Department said around 1:45 p.m. that crews on scene had gone through multiple bottles of air as part of their response.
Just before 2:30 p.m., fire officials said all firefighters had been ordered out of the building as crews continued to fight flames from the exterior.
Everyone inside when the fire started was able to get out of the building, officials said. The firefighter who was taken to the hospital suffered minor injuries and is expected to be okay.
Personnel from the Salvation Army and the Red Cross mobilized on Tuesday to help provide food and services to those displaced.
Some of the home’s residents were seen on the sidewalk watching their house burn.
Speaking with 7NEWS, one person said the people who lived inside are holding onto hope that they’ll get the help they need to rebuild.
“We are devastated, but I think we’re going to be ok,” the person said.
Fire crews were packing up at the scene around 6 p.m. after officials said they believe the fire started in the building’s basement.
There was no word as of Tuesday night on the fire’s cause.
