PLYMOUTH, MASS. (WHDH) - Plymouth beaches were evacuated Saturday after a confirmed shark sighting.

According to Plymouth Police, a shark was sighted off of Whitehorse Beach.

Everyone was ordered out of the water at Long Beach and White Horse Beach.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy confirmed the sighting by a seasoned lobsterman.

For 50 years, fisherman Bob Ward has been casting his line in the waters off of Plymouth, and he’s never seen a great white shark in the waters, until now.

The Plymouth man said he saw the shark about a half mile off shore and called his sighting in order to make sure no swimmers were harmed.

Ward said the shark eventually got scared the their boat and swam away.

The beaches were cleared at 2 p.m. as the harbormaster checked the area and reopened Sunday.
