YARMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) — A 24-year-old was killed in Yarmouth Monday morning during a police chase.

Police were said Michael Florio was thrown from his SUV when he crashed into another vehicle.

"Remember this is someone looking back should have just pulled over and stopped. And unfortunately he did not. It's a tragic situation,” Yarmouth Deputy Chief Steven Xiarhos said.

The chase started Monday morning when Florio was spotted breaking into his grandmother’s house.

When police arrived he took off in the SUV and was followed by police for a few minutes before the crash.

"We know the family of the young man that passed. They're very remorseful as well. I was the one that actually told the father. I've been on the receiving end of that I lost my son in Afghanistan. I made sure it was something I could do to try and comfort him," Xiarhos said.

Police said they followed policy for the high-speed chase, and that it will be investigated, but that’s not what’s most important at the moment.

"A young man has died, it's truly truly a tragedy,” Xiarhos said.

The driver of the vehicle Florio hit was not injured.
