Three adults and three children were hurt in a house fire in Hingham Sunday night.

The fire sparked on Whitting Street after 11 p.m. Tom McCann said he was forced to jump to safety from the second floor after he found the stairway full of smoke.

Everyone was alerted by working smoke detectors and managed to get out of the house but McCann’s wife, son, daughter-in-law and three granchildren were all in need of medical help. His 18-month-old grandson was taken to Shriner’s Hospital with burns over 40 percent of his body.

Firefighters said the fire began in the basement but the cause is under investigation.
