14-year-old struck, killed by car while riding bike in Brockton

BROCKTON, MASS. (WHDH) - The teenage boy who was hit and killed by a car while he was riding his bicycle in Brockton Tuesday has been identified as 14-year-old Madio Djalo.

Djalo was a freshman at Brockton High School. He spent years in the Brockton School District after emigrating to the U.S. from Guinea.

Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter said he has heard high praises on Madio Djalo. “Everything I’ve heard about the young man this morning was just that he was a wonderful young man, excellent student, model citizen,” Carpenter said.

The crash happened just before 7 p.m. Tuesday night. Carpenter says the boy was riding his bike along Main Street when the driver of the SUV somehow hit him.

Investigators are looking into the possibility of a second car that could have influenced what happened without making direct contact.

Accident reconstruction teams spent hours at the scene last night.

Officers say the driver, believed to be 18, was shaken up by what happened, but Carpenter says he was cooperative.

State police are investigating the crash.

Grief counselor teams are at three schools in the city: the high school where Djalo was a student, and an elementary and junior high school were the victim has siblings.

The principal of Brockton High School released a statement Wednesday afternoon:

It was with great sadness that we had to inform our students and staff about the loss of one of our students. Though he was a freshman at BHS, he was well known and liked by his classmates, teachers and counselors. The loss of a student is always difficult and impacts our entire BHS family. Our crisis management team, with the support of additional adjustment counselors from the district will continue to provide grief counseling to all who need it. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this most difficult time.
