SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Four children were among the seven people taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation after a fire early Wednesday morning in Massachusetts, fire officials said.

The fire in Springfield’s Indian Orchard neighborhood was reported at about 6 a.m., fire Capt. Drew Piemonte said at the scene.

The victims were conscious and alert but Piemonte said he had no additional information on their conditions. No names or ages were released.

Several pets were also saved, he said.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
