Rio is the first South American city to host the Olympics and the arenas and locations were chosen to showcase important parts of the city. The Maracanã Stadium, Rio’s soccer stadium, hosted the Opening Ceremony and will host the Closing Ceremony, where the torch will be passed to Tokyo, the city hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics. The soccer finals will also be played at Maracanã.

At the Deodoro Stadium in the northern part of the city, rugby and equestrian competitions are taking place, along with BMX events. Rio’s famous Copacabana Beach is hosting beach volleyball.
Most of the events, including gymnastics and swimming, are at compact arenas in the Barra da Tijuca, where the Olympic Park and Village are located.
