RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL (WHDH) - Vibrant, colorful and lush Rio de Janeiro is one of the cultural centers of South America.
7News’ Nancy Chen got a chance to explore some of the city’s most iconic sights.
First up – Christ the Redeemer – one of the seven new wonders of the world.
It tops a mountain 2,300 feet high over the city. To get there, you must take a tram that cuts through the Tijuca Forest, providing some jaw-dropping views along the way.
Then, it’s a steep climb to the top.
The view is supposed to be one of the best in the city. Rain or shine, you can’t leave without snapping a touristy pic.
From there, it was back down into the city itself.
Rio is a city of passion, and that’s evident in the Selaron Steps, named after the artist who reconstructed them as a tribute to the Brazilian people.
At first, Jorge Selaron’s neighbors mocked him for covering the steps in the colors of the Brazilian flag. But he continued on, selling paintings to raise money to do so.
Then visitors from all around the world started donating tiles, and now there are more than 2,000 of them for more than 60 countries around the world.
No visit to Rio would be complete without a trip to Copacabana, one of the most famous beaches in the world. It’s known for its perfect waves, its perfect sand, and its perfect way of life.
