Adam Peaty advanced from the semifinals into Sunday’s 100m breaststroke final after clocking the field’s fastest time, 57.62 seconds. Peaty, racing at his first Games, broke his own 100m breaststroke world record earlier Saturday in his first Olympic swim.
Team USA’s Cody Miller, racing at his first Olympic Games, qualified in second place with 59.05 seconds. Miller’s time was faster than the reigning Olympic champion, South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh, who qualified third with a time of 59.21 seconds.
Americans Kevin Cordes qualified into the final in fifth place, racing to 59.33.
