KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan official says at least 20 people have been killed in flash floods that struck the northern province of Sari Pul.

Zabihullah Amani, spokesman for the provincial governor, said Wednesday that the flooding hit the remote Kohistanat district in the south of the province.

He says 22 people were wounded and several houses were destroyed or washed away. Amani adds that the afflicted area is partially controlled by the Taliban.

Regional leaders have appealed for help from non-governmental relief agencies to reach people in need.

Large parts of northern Afghanistan are often afflicted by flooding after heavy rains, as over-grazing and deforestation have made many areas vulnerable to floods.
