An Afghan official says that a policeman has turned his weapon on fellow police officers at a checkpoint in the country’s south, killing 10 policemen.
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.
Dost Mohammad Nayab, the spokesman for the governor in southern Uruzgan province, said on Tuesday that the bodies of the slain policemen were found at the checkpoint in Chinarto district.
Nayab says the shooter killed his fellow policemen while they were asleep late Monday night, then fled the scene after stealing all their weapons and ammunition.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi says the attacker was their man and that he is now with the Taliban.
Such insider attacks are often happening in the remote areas of the country especially where Taliban insurgents have a strong presence.
