BOSTON (AP) — Amateur aviators will have a chance to launch their homemade flying contraptions over the Charles River in Boston this weekend.
Energy drink maker Red Bull is hosting its first Flugtag competition in the city Saturday. Flugtag is German for “flight day.”
The competitions pit teams to see who can build and pilot the best non-motorized flying object. The competitions have been hosted across the globe since the 1990s.
This year’s entries have a decidedly New England theme. They include contraptions resembling a Boston cream pie, an MBTA subway car, a Fenway Frank and a lobster roll.
The objects will be launched over a nearly 30-foot flight deck into the Charles River. Contestants are judged on flight distance, craft creativity and showmanship.
The event is free to attend.
