DENNIS, MASS. (WHDH) - The New England Aquarium released a rare sea turtle on Cape Cod Thursday after a long rehabilitation.
In December 2015, a large Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle washed up in Truro.
The turtle was hypothermic and near death, with multiple medical complications, officials said.
Eventually, her appetite slowly increased and her weight went from an emaciated 40 pounds to a robust 55 pounds.
After nearly eight months of rehabilitation at the New England Aquarium’s sea turtle hospital in Quincy, the sea turtle was released at West Dennis Beach.
Biologists still do not have a clear idea as to why it was so far out of its normal range, which is the mid-Atlantic area, but they outfitted it with a satellite tag that will track its movement over the next few months.
