AUBURN, Mass. (WHDH) — Out of nowhere a bus slammed into Laura Erickson’s home while she was in the shower Monday.
“I just remember waking up on the floor of the tub with debris all over…the toilet…screaming at the top of my lungs for the kids,” said Erickson.
Austin, 14, was found in the kitchen, right where the bus knocked the Auburn home seven feet of its foundation.
“The refrigerator fell right on me. I had to push it away, then ran to my brother,” said Austin.
Austin’s brother, Tyler, couldn’t believe what was happening.
“The house was shaking and then I thought it was a hurricane…something fell and cut my head…I got two staples,” said Tyler.
Police said for some reason the driver of the bus lost control. The driver remains in the hospital with serious injuries. One passenger was treated for cuts to their face.
Investigators will be checking to see if a medical issue or something else led to the crash. They will analyze the bus’ black box Wednesday to see the speed the bus was traveling and to determine if the brakes were ever applied.
Police will also be looking at the driver’s cell phone records to make sure he wasn’t texting.
“Miracle, really is, someone was watching over us,” said Laura Erickson.
For now, the Erickson family tries to recover from their cuts, scrapes and memories of the crash.
“They walked out of the hospital and saw a bus and got scared. They thought a tornado hit us,” said Laura Erickson.
The family said they do plan on rebuilding their home, which will be torn down in the coming days.
