Australia and New Zealand won semifinal matches Monday afternoon to advance to the women’s rugby sevens Gold Medal Match.
Top-seeded Australia defeated Canada 17-5. Canada scored its only try in the final minute of the match.
Portia Woodman scored three tries to lead New Zealand over Great Britain, 25-7.
Australia and New Zealand will play in the Gold Medal Match tonight at 6:00 p.m. ET. The winner will earn the first-ever Olympic women’s rugby gold medal. Rugby has not been played at the Olympics in 1924, when men played the 15-a-side version of the sport.
Canada and Great Britain will compete for the bronze medal at 5:30 p.m. ET
Earlier on Monday, the U.S. women defeated Fiji, 12-7, with actor Matthew McConaughey in attendance. Alev Kelter and Richelle Stephens scored tries for the U.S.
The U.S. will return to the pitch at 5:00 p.m. ET against France. The winner will finish fifth, while the loser will finish sixth.
