Australia’s Mack Horton beat Sun Yang to the wall for 400m freestyle Olympic gold by 0.13 seconds. Horton clocked four three minutes, 41.55 seconds while Sun, the 2012 gold medalist, raced 3:41.68 for silver. Gabrielle Detti of Italy claimed the bronze with 3:43.49.
Team USA member Conor Dwyer – who Snapchatted a short video of shaving his legs last night as a pre-race ritual – clocked in the preliminary 3:43.42, his personal best, as the fastest man headed into the final. He finished in fourth in the final with 3:44.01.
American Connor Jaeger, who finished fourth in the event at the 2015 World Championships, was fifth in 3:44.16.
2012 Olympic silver medalist, Park Tae Hwan of South Korea, missed out on qualifying for the eight-man final.
