(NBC) — Don’t be surprised if your favorite restaurant is out of guacamole for a while.

A shortage of avocados is pushing avocado prices by double – and in some cases, triple – from a year ago.

In recent weeks, the US market supply has dwindled as a result of a grower’s strike in Mexico, leaving retailers struggling to find avocados and some restaurants temporarily dropping guacamole from menus.

According to produce experts, high prices at supermarkets could linger until after the Super Bowl, which is when demand for guacamole tends to be at its highest.
