Roads can be closed for any number of reasons – weather, or construction – but salamanders?

That’s the reason the Ayer Police gave on Facebook.

The Ayer Police posted a photo of Bishop Road/McPherson Road, closed with a chain link fence with a sign, "Road Closed – Salamander Migration."

The police noted in the comments that it’s to protect the endangered spotted salamander, and it was the decision of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to close the road.

They also noted that pedestrians shouldn’t be affected, "…but watch your step!"

The police did not provide a timetable for the road closure.
