LOWELL, MASS. (WHDH) - People hoping to cool off at a Lowell beach were told to stay out of the water because of high bacteria levels.

The city said high bacteria in the Merrimack River is keeping everyone out of the water at Rynnes Beach until further notice.

“The one day I get off work this week, I wanted to swim for a couple of hours so it’s a little disappointing,” said Emily Salemi.

In the meantime, misting stations have been set up around the beach to give beachgoers some relief from the hot weather Wednesday. Temperatures reached 90 degrees Wednesday and it is expected to remain hot for the rest of the week.
