Be kind, rewind… what used to be a VHS rental slogan is now apparently a favorite slogan from Mother Nature as the weather tape has been backed up to the start of the year. It’s more like January 5th this morning, not April 5th.
It was impressive to see the tenacity of the cold air yesterday. With a high of 22 in Worcester and 30 in Boston, it was indeed record cold for high temps for the date. That cold air anchored in also allowed for the snow to create numerous problems on the road with snow sticking and covering the streets during periods of steady/heavier snow. With the cold air hanging tough, we also saw the rain/snow line smashed south of most of us. That brought snow totals to 6-9" from Plymouth to Freetown! For the most part, many towns did come in between 4-6", including Boston at 4.7" (the 7th largest April snowstorm on record).
Back to today… Wind chill factors run in the single digits and lower teens to start the day with air temps in the upper teens and 20s. We’ll recover to the mid to upper 30s this afternoon with some returning sun. That’ll get some melting done, but not completely melting all of our snow. In fact, we even has a few ocean effect snow showers backing in across southeast Mass, allowing for an additional coating in spots this morning.
Areas of refreeze occur tonight thanks to near record cold. Teens in the burbs and 20s in the city.
More melting is done tomorrow as highs reach the lower 40s with sun yielding to more afternoon clouds.
Thursday brings in milder air and downpours by the afternoon/evening. About 1-1.5" of rain is possible. I expect colder air, but mainly dry air to return this weekend. Long range forecast shows opening day at Fenway closer to seasonal level with sun to clouds and temps in the 40s to near 50. Play Ball!
