NEW HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) — Emergency crews have recovered the body of boater who New Hampshire authorities believe drowned in the Pemigewasset River over the weekend while trying to rescue one of his dogs.

The New Hampshire State Police-Marine Patrol said the body of the 54-year-old man was found early Monday after a search was called off Sunday night.

Police say a couple was out on the river in a small boat when their four dogs jumped overboard. The husband, who has not yet been identified, dove into the water to retrieve the dog.

The man began to struggle and lifejackets were thrown to him but he was not able to reach them, police said. He was seen with the dog on his chest before he slipped below the surface.
