HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say a 19-year-old man who was in a van being chased by police has died after jumping into a Holyoke canal.

A spokesman for the Hampden district attorney’s office says police were pursuing the van because it had been reported stolen when it crashed at about 5:30 a.m. Friday.

The district attorney’s office says two people were in the van. One was taken into custody after the crash. The other jumped into the canal and disappeared under the water while trying to swim across. His body was found by a police dive team. Authorities identified him as Alexander Torres, of Holyoke.

Authorities say a woman reported that she had been assaulted earlier in the morning and reported that the attackers stole her van.

The district attorney’s office is investigating.
