MEDFIELD, MASS. (WHDH) - Boston Marathon bombing survivor Heather Abbott is helping a young athlete get back on her feet.

The Heather Abbott Foundation has teamed up with some Medfield middle schoolers to get a 9-year-old a new prosthetic leg.

Swapma Oslund of Beverly has undergone more than 18 surgeries, and in 2014 she had to have her leg amputated.

Abbott said the middle schoolers reached out to her, and she knew she had to step up to help.

The students wanted to buy Oslund a new prosthetic leg after her old one broke.

Giving her the prosthetic prevented Oslund’s family from having to worry about the cost, which would have been $10,000-$20,000.

Oslund’s said her favorite thing about her new leg is that she can now beat her 12-year-old brother in a race.
