BOSTON (AP) — Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is hoping to bring self-driving cars to the city’s narrow, twisting roads.
Walsh announced the launch of a program Wednesday designed to help develop autonomous technologies within Boston, whose original street plan — according to local lore — was laid down in part based on the paths that cows cut through the city.
The Democrat said the yearlong project will include on-street testing of the autonomous vehicles to help determine their safety.
Walsh says the project is part of larger effort to provide those who live and work in Boston with additional safe and reliable ways to get around the city.
Supporters say the technology could help ease traffic, reduce fatal accidents, and lower emissions.
The announcement comes as Pittsburgh begins testing self-driving Uber cars.
