BOSTON (WHDH) - Boston Police are cracking down on drag racing.

This past weekend, police conducted an operation in the area of New Market Square in South Boston to address criminal drag racing.

Since February 2016, police said there has been a steady increase in drag racing.

During the events, large crowds have gathered to watched vehicles including modified cars, trucks, ATVs and dirt bikes race one another.

In the past, attempts at police enforcement resulted in the crowd dispersing, allowing perpetrators to leave the scene undetected, police said.

Police have issued approximately 75 citations, 35 criminal complaint applications and have filed immediate threat reports to have the licenses of the drivers of the cars revokesd.

Participants come from all over the state, including the North Shore, Lowell, Everett, Lynn and Boston.
