BOSTON (WHDH) - The organizer of the Fourth of July concert and fireworks on the Esplanade is looking for someone to save the show.

If officials don’t find funding for next year, the event could be in jeopardy.

It’s one of the iconic symbols of Boston, the July 4th Boston Pops concert and fireworks gala on the Esplanade, which draws half a million people each year.

David Mugar, who founded the event in 1974, said he is retiring after this year but has not found a new sponsor to pay for it.

After 11 years, Liberty Mutual withdrew as a sponsor after last year’s event.

Mugar has since reached out to more than a thousand companies, but none has agreed to sponsor one of Boston’s great traditions.

There is no sponsor for this year’s event, so Mugar is footing the $2 million bill himself.
