BOSTON (WHDH) - Dozens of Boston Public Schools will extend the school day by 40 minutes sometime by 2018.

The decision will impact 39 schools throughout the city and about 15,000 students from kindergarten to eighth grade.

Supporters say the extended days aim to close opportunity and achievement gaps in city schools.

The extended day will cost the city $14 million, most of which will cover extra pay for teachers and other staff.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is a big supporter of the decision.

“I am proud that Boston will soon provide more time for enrichment, intervention and personalized learning opportunities to a majority of our students,” Walsh said.

“Our children need and deserve more time for high-quality instruction.”
