BOSTON (AP) — The stepmother of a 3-year-old Boston boy who died after being found unresponsive at his home earlier this year is facing arraignment.

Maria Buie is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on a charge of second-degree murder stemming from the beating death of Kenai Whyte.

The boy was found unresponsive in his home in the city’s Roxbury neighborhood on the night of Jan. 31 and died of his injuries on Feb. 2. Prosecutors say the boy suffered serious injuries to his neck, eyes, head, back and penis.

Prosecutors say the 26-year-old Buie was the boy’s only caregiver when police arrived at the home.

Buie’s attorney says his client “loved Kenai like her own son,” and “did not commit the acts of which she is accused.”
