Both of Maine’s members of the U.S. House say they’ll vote to impeach the president after a mob marched to the U.S. Capitol at his urging and forced its way into the building.
Rep. Jared Golden announced he’s joining fellow Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree in supporting impeachment of Republican President Trump for inciting insurrection, which Golden said “clearly meets the threshold of a ‘high crime or misdemeanor.’”
He accused Trump of misleading supporters with claims including massive voter fraud that the president said cost him the election.
“To be clear, the 2020 election was both free and fair, and its results are fully legitimate. In claiming otherwise, the president, members of his cabinet and administration, and some members of Congress have knowingly lied to the American public,” Golden said Monday evening in a statement.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is summoning lawmakers back to Washington for votes, and some Republicans are joining Democrats.
The mob overpowered U.S. Capitol Police and forced members of Congress to delay the counting of electoral votes on Wednesday. A Capitol Police officer and four others died.
