An 8 year-old boy is in serious condition after being hit by a pick-up truck in Cambridge.

He was rushed to Mass General Hospital with life-threatening injuries and underwent surgery late Tuesday night.

The incident happened around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, on First Street and Land Boulevard, according to the Massachusetts State Police.

State police say he was with an uncle and two other children ages 8 and 11, all of them relatives, when he was struck by a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup truck.

State police say the driver, a 53-year-old man, stayed on scene and was cooperative with investigators. So far no charges have been made.

A preliminary investigation by the State Police suggests the children had run ahead of the adult who was with them and entered the road without stopping in an area with no crosswalk.

Police say there is no indication that the truck’s operator was impaired or distracted by his cell phone.

Accident reconstruction crews are working to determine if it was possible for the driver to stop in time.
