BRAINTREE, MASS. (WHDH) - The suspect accused of hitting and killing a woman in Braintree last week was arraigned Monday as tempers flared in the courtroom.
Ryan Brady, 34, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death. Police said Brady hit 62-year-old Irina Hyde with his car on Shaw Street as she walked home from her job at a nursing home. Brady then allegedly drove off. A front grill to a 2000-2002 Mazda 626 sedan was left at the scene. Police said the car was found at the Braintree Village Apartment Complex, where Brady lives with his fiancee.
Hyde was rushed to South Shore Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her husband, Tony Hyde, said she was a Russian immigrant and they had been married for five years. She was in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen.
Brady sobbed openly in court as the district attorney described the incident. A witness says Brady’s car stopped briefly, then kept driving. Prosecutors said Brady admitted he was behind the wheel and heard a knocking noise and slowed down, but didn’t see anything. He told police he then he drove to a restaurant to pick up Chinese food.
Court proceedings were halted after Tony Hyde cried out “Murderer!” An ambulance was also called after Hyde’s daughter collapsed in the courtroom and she was brought to the hospital for emergency treatment.
“He may get out in two years, two and a half years, and can resume his life. My wife is gone forever,” said Tony Hyde. He said he was not moved by Brady’s tears and believes he was faking it for leniency.
A police report revealed Brady had substance issues in the past but claimed he was not drunk or high on Thursday.
A judge set the bail at $10,000.
