A new art installation by Bulgarian artist Christo opened to the public Saturday morning on an Italian lake.
“The Floating Piers” allows people to walk along the lakeside and over the water, supported by miles of floating pontoons.
The installation is 2.8 miles long, connecting the town of Sulzano on the edge of the lake with two islands.
It is made up of 200,000 plastic cubes covered in bright yellow-orange fabric.
Christo, the artist, said he funded the project using proceeds from the sale of his own work.
According to Christo, the artwork is more than the material it’s made from. It’s also the lake and its surroundings.
Hundreds of people waited all night for the opening at 7:40 a.m.
“The Floating Piers” is open to the public until July 3.
According to initial projections, the installation will bring in $55 million in revenue to the Lake Iseo community.
