BOSTON (WHDH) — Whitey Bulger’s lawyers are now saying the entire trial could have been avoided.

J.W. Carney revealed that early on in the case, the crime boss indicated that he would plead guilty to everything if the government would show consideration to Bulger's girlfriend, Catherine Greig.

After their capture in 2011 Greig was sentenced to eight-years for helping Bulger during their time on the run.

“I’m sure the public is going to look at that and say, ‘is that true?’ If it’s true how come it didn’t happen? The public and news, mostly public asking the attorney’s office how come there wasn’t a deal? I think in fairness in her and to that office, they need an opportunity to answer that,” said Tom Hoopes, 7News legal analyst.

Hoopes also says another question that has been raised is: since Bulger claimed he wasn't guilty because he had immunity, would he still agree to plead guilty to everything?
