A quick-thinking driver in Washington state rescued the children on board his school bus after it caught fire.

Midday through his morning route on Monday, Ron Kitts said his bus started acting strange. One of the tires then caught on fire. He used the fire extinguisher but was unable to save the bus.

"The windows were breaking, the tires were exploding, it was loud," said Kitts. "When it would pop, the kids would kind of get scared."

Unable to extinguish the fire completely, Kitts focused on helping his passengers. Kitts had eight children on his bus, all with special needs. Kitts carried them to the back and handed them off to a parent outside. Everyone got off the bus safely.

Kitts is being called a hero by the children’s parents but he said he just did what was in his nature.

"I wasn’t going to leave them, no way," said Kitts.
